Fitocracy

Social media sites often do little to help us get away from out computer screens. However, with a new mobile app out this month, fitness site Fitocracy is doing more to encourage us to get up and get active.

Founded in February 2011, Fitocracy is a fitness tracking platform vaguely similar to facebook. In essence, Fitocracy makes a game out of getting fit. Users are rewarded with points as they log their work outs onto their profile, eventually levelling up and earning rewards.

You can keep track of your friends’ progress whilst sharing your own. Fitocracy creates a virtual fitness community which is a great platform to share your experiences with like-minded folk, as well as tapping into your competitive side.

Extra points are earned through ‘quests’; these can be more than your average exercise routines. The ‘Paperboy’ quest asks you to cycle around your neighborhood, and if you hit a rubbish bin you have to sprint away as though being chased by a dog. Of course, there are more traditional quests for every day. Fitocracy lets you choose how you mix things up in your work out and rewards you accordingly.

Fitocracy has already had a partnership with Red Bull, who sponsored a series of extreme-sport themed quests. The snowboarding quest featured split jump squats, skipping, lateral lunges and lateral hurdle jumps. Even if you’re just looking to mix some variety into an established routine, Fitocracy is definitely somewhere to go for ideas.

Even though it’s still in beta testing stages, Fitocracy has nearly 250,000 members, all on an invite only basis and without a mobile app. With an app looking to be released in the next month, the demand looks set to explode.

So, if you’re looking to build muscle, stamina, lose weight or just get fit, Fitocracy is a great way to get that, often much needed, extra motivation.
