What have you got planned this weekend? A quite one relaxing? Or are you going to hit the great outdoors? There is still snow lying around in some parts of the country so this weekend could be idea to get out, take a camera and get active. Walking is a great pastime and a way to relax the mind and invigorate the body. But if walking is not pacey enough for you, take it to the next level and try fell running.

Fell Running is basically running up and down mountains and hills and believe it or not is very popular.

As it sounds, fell running takes athletes to the next level, off-road, across rough terrain, using strength and stamina to overcome that burn as one side is an uphill struggle. Fell Running is very popular in the north of England, due to the terrain. Believe it or not, history believes the first Fell race was way back in 1040 between two messengers. It was also believed that Fell Running was part of the highland games and included other elements such as wrestling and throwing the hammer.

So, how does Fell running fair today? Well for a start you need a majorly sturdy pair of running shoes that will support your ankles as you hit rough terrain. In conditions like the current weather, you will need thermal clothing that will wick away any moisture. You will also need energy bars or protein shakes to keep up your stamina.

Fell running is a brilliant sport for fitness and if you do go and try it on your own, it sounds obvious, but make sure you tell someone where you are going. Some fell runners take an array of equipment purely in case they have a fall or accident and can contact someone (not to put a downer of this brilliant outdoor sport).

Hit the mountain this weekend for fitness.
